THE PROJECT

The West Arthur Wind Farm will connect to the new Clean Energy Link – East: Stage 1 Cordering Terminal in 2029.

The project is located south of the town of Darkan, within the Shire of West Arthur in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia.

Energy from the wind farm will flow via Clean Energy Link – East to the Colie region and then into the wider Western Power network through the existing power lines that already run from the coal fired power stations to all users in the south-west grid. The project is therefore strategically positioned to support the energy transition from coal-fired generation to renewable energy.

The project has been designed following detailed technical, environmental and planning assessment. The current proposed project comprises a development of up to 92 wind turbine generators, a 500 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) which has 8 hours of energy storage and other associated infrastructure. All infrastructure locations have been agreed with landowners hosting the project.

Current workstreams underway on the project include:​

As the development process progresses, we will engage with all stakeholders in a manner consistent with industry best practice to build an understanding of the project and any potential impacts as well as seek input on the development.  As part of the development process, we are speaking with neighbours, the local Council and the wider community on the proposed project design. 

The 92 turbine project may be constructed in one or more phases as the demand for power increases over time. In addition there may be future stages of the project developed further east out towards Arthur River and Wagin, which would have their own consultation and approval process.

Timelines

The project is currently in the planning and approvals stage of development.

The West Arthur Wind Farm has been in development for approximately four years and construction is planned to commence in late 2027, with the construction and commissioning period for the project of around 2.5 years.
